1
Patent Searching
Explore the landscape of existing inventions to uncover opportunities and avoid obstacles. Patent searching is the process of looking through existing patents, published patent applications, and non-patent technical materials to see what has already been invented or publicly disclosed. Your patent is only as valuable as it is truly novel.
Searching is one of the earliest and most cost-effective steps you can take to understand the competitive landscape, avoid rejection or future invalidation based on known art, and strategically craft your patent around the state of the art. Using the best data sources and strategies available, our patent search specialists will work alongside your engineers, scientists, legal, and executive teams to uncover deep search results that will help ensure both the most effective use of your budget and the most robust long-term property rights.

2
Patent Application Drafting
Turn your invention into a clear, comprehensive patent application. A patent application is a formal document submitted to a patent office to seek legal protection for an invention. It typically includes a detailed description of the invention, drawings illustrating its features, and claims defining the scope of protection sought. Once granted, a patent provides exclusive rights to the invention for a limited time.
Your inventors and business team will work alongside our expert practitioners to translate your invention into a patent application crafted intentionally to secure strong, enforceable patent rights, protect valuable innovations, and preserve flexibility as technologies evolve and business needs change.

3
Patent Prosecution
Transform your patent application into intellectual property. Patent prosecution is the process of working through the examination of your patent application with patent offices around the world. It involves navigating office actions, overcoming objections, negotiating claims, and moving your invention closer to allowance – a government-recognized property right.
Our patent agents will guide you through the process and interface on your behalf to get your invention from a drafted application to a granted patent. By leveraging decades of domestic and international prosecution experience, combined with expertise in both patent statute, as well as evolving case law, our practitioners will help secure strong, enforceable patent rights that align with an inventor’s technology and business goals.

4
Patent Portfolio Strategy and Maintenance
Manage and expand your portfolio. As your business grows, your technology evolves, and the competitive landscape shifts, it's critical to keep your patent rights closely aligned with your business objectives. By strategically building your portfolio, identifying new opportunities, and extending protections internationally, you help ensure that your granted patents remain core business assets. Preservation of rights also requires carefully tracking deadlines and paying fees across all covered jurisdictions.
Aurora can manage this complexity so you don't lose valuable rights, and our practitioners will help you make informed, strategic decisions to ensure patent investments provide meaningful protection, maximize value, minimize spend, and evolve alongside your technologies and commercial priorities.

FAQ
Answers to common questions we get about patents and our services.

What is a patent?
A patent or utility patent is a form of intellectual property that protects new and useful inventions. When granted on an invention, a patent is a property right that can be used to prevent others from making, using, selling, offering for sale, or otherwise importing the invention into the United States (or in whichever jurisdiction your patent is in force). Utility patents are in force for 20 years. Patents can also be granted on ornamentation or designs (design patents). Design patents are in force for 15 years.
Can I pitch my idea before protecting it?
Ideally, you would file a provisional patent application (secures a filing date and protects you for future patent filing opportunities) before you pitch your idea or speak with investors. Not doing so could constitute public disclosure and significantly reduce or eliminate your ability to obtain a patent. If the pitch occurs before the idea is ready for patenting (i.e., it can be described in detail, drawn, and/or made), then pitching before you file may be okay.
Can I draft and file my own patent application?
Legally, yes. But like with surgery, taxes, and home improvement, it can be a good idea to instead leverage the help of those who make it their focus. Patent application drafting is an art form where the draftsperson is simultaneously accounting for the details of the invention, desired breadth, relevant case law, litigation and PTAB future-proofing, prior art search results, conventional wisdom in the art, client desires, potential prosecution hurdles, and so much more. Filing with the patent office is its own dark art, especially when navigating USPTO practice and proceedings. In our experience, Client drafts and filings usually end up costing the Client more to fix in the long term and result in devalued portfolios. The better practice is to work closely with a practitioner to ensure the claims and patent application cover what you need them to, and prosecution evolves in an advantageous way – leaving the liability and procedural headaches to the professionals!
Can I use AI for invention ideation and for drafting my own patent application?
For invention ideation and building out an invention disclosure form, using “no data retention” and “no training on your data” AI models is the perfect use case for AI. The key is to distill the AI-based iteration into a succinct, few-page invention disclosure that does not bury the lede and keeps the actual invention front and center. Providing a practitioner with volumes of chat threads in which your invention is buried will only cost you time and money as the practitioner pours through innumerable non-essential details to find the nugget.
For drafting patent applications, this is a hard no. Even in the hands of very capable and technical practitioners, working with AI to draft patent applications is a skill that requires section-by-section drafting, significant oversight, detailed prompt generation, and extensive review. Your time is best spent developing the best invention disclosure, having a detailed conversation with your practitioner, and reviewing the draft(s) extensively to ensure accuracy and coverage of your invention.
I received an office action. Can you help?
Yes. Office Actions are extremely common in most patent applications. If you don’t receive an office action (the case moves straight to allowance), maybe you didn’t ask for enough breadth in the claims 🙂 Responding to office actions is an art form that should not be delegated to AI. Preparing office action responses is a delicate balance of addressing each and every rejection, while maintaining coverage of the product or competitor with the claims and not putting too much on the record with the arguments, which could harm future self in litigation, licensing, or other administrative or judicial proceedings.
How much should my idea be fleshed out before seeking a patent?
The inventor should be able to describe in some detail how the product is made, its structure, and/or its function. You don’t need a prototype. You just have to be able to describe how to reduce the invention to practice. For example, a rough sketch, image, or write-up is ideal. We provide an easy-to-use invention disclosure form to help inventors with this process. While not required, having a prototype early in the process can still be helpful for patentability, since prototyping often serves as a forcing function for driving the kind of patentable problem-solving needed to make the invention actually work.
Can you still help me if I live in a different state or country?
Absolutely. We have clients across the U.S. and the globe. We have worked with clients and inventors in 36 countries worldwide and 40 U.S. states and territories. 99% of the time we get what we need with video calls and other collaboration tools. In very rare cases involving specialized labs and things that require more hands-on work, we have flown to clients. To make the process go smoothly, we identify where the entity is incorporated, where the inventors reside and hold citizenship, and where the invention was conceived. This helps us determine which receiving office(s) can be used for international filings and whether foreign filing licenses will be needed. Innovation has no barriers!
Do you have domain expertise for my invention?
Our practitioners have many decades of experience in most technical areas, including software, machine learning and artificial intelligence, medical devices (software-enabled and non-software-enabled), digital health, consumer products, design, robotics, fitness, life sciences, biotech, etc. If you are patenting a new molecular entity or highly complex chemical compositions, then we would refer you to another firm.
Do I need a patent attorney?
If you are looking for help with patent application drafting, filing, prosecution, maintenance, strategy, and portfolio management within the U.S. and/or internationally, a patent agent is the perfect choice! Patent agents tend to be technical experts (holding advanced technical degrees), with extensive domain expertise and creative thinking, especially in strategy. Patent agents have a laser focus on patent law and are required to pass the same patent bar as patent attorneys, but their services often come at a fraction of the cost of an attorney at a traditional law firm. If you are looking into other forms of intellectual property, like copyright, trade secrets, and trademarks; licensing or selling your patent or portfolio, or litigating, then an attorney is the only choice.
